Real women, Real stories: Colleen - from tragedy to triumph, a story of healing

Colleen Kelly Alexander is a remarkable woman whose journey exemplifies profound resilience and a commitment to healing and compassion. In October 2011, while cycling home, she was struck by a freight truck that ran a stop sign, resulting in catastrophic injuries. Her abdomen was torn open, her pelvis shattered, and she suffered extensive damage to her lower body. Colleen flatlined twice and required over 70 blood transfusions during her recovery.

Despite these life-threatening injuries, Colleen's determination to reclaim her life was unwavering. After enduring more up to 28 surgeries and spending weeks in a coma, she not only learned to walk again but also returned to her passion for athletics. Since her accident, she has completed over 75 races, including multiple triathlons and half-Ironman events.

Colleen's journey of recovery and personal growth led her to establish the Anam Cara Sanctuary Farm, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe haven for farm animals that have been neglected or abused. The sanctuary offers these animals a life of compassion and dignity. Additionally, it serves as a space for humans to engage in healing practices such as yoga, meditation, and sound therapy, fostering connections between people and animals to promote mutual healing.

The resilience Colleen demonstrates is evident in her transformation of personal trauma into a mission of service and healing for others. Her ability to overcome immense physical and emotional challenges and channel her experiences into creating a sanctuary embodies the spirit of perseverance and altruism. Supporting Anam Cara Sanctuary Farm aligns with the values of compassion, healing, and community engagement, making it a worthy cause for support on Giving Tuesday.
